Science Fair 2007
Junior Scientists full of creativity and investigation were on hand at the First
Annual St. Rose of   Lima School Science Fair.  At the start of the school year, each student was
required to select a topic, introduce their experiment and explain why they were interested in this
particular experiment. They each then formulated a Purpose, a Hypothesis and then began their
experiments under controlled conditions!

Students from Grades 4 through 8 proudly displayed and explained their experiments during an
evening of Science on April 10, 2008.

Sr. Kathleen Gallina, Principal, and Science Teachers, Mrs. Elizabeth Bingham,
Miss Kathleen Colquhoun, Mrs. Maria Agro Muratore and Miss Watkins
were all on hand for the event.

Here are just a small sample of the experiments that were conducted in 2007.

Can Coke Act as A Cleaning Agent? Michael Parmiter,
Grade 5 determined that  coke cleaned a penny the best
out of all of the items he attempted to clean.

Can Plants Grow Without Soil? Ashley Hayes and
Katherine Piorkowski, Grade 4 determined that yes,
plants can grow without soil! They placed vegetables
and seeds in water and found that they indeed grew.

Are Some Metals Better Conductors Than Others?
Mark Hunstein and Danny Emmons, Grade 6 determined
that Copper was the best conductor. They found that all
of the other metals held the voltage back from
                                                                being  transmitted.

How Do Banana’s Stay Fresher? Erica Woronecki, Gr 4 determined
that after 6 days, the bananas that she hung on a banana tree
stayed fresher than the banana’s she placed on a granite
surface.

How Does a Dog’s Sense of Smell Help It Find Food?
Vincent Thompson, Gr 5 used his dog as the variable
during his experiment. He secretly placed dog bones
around his home in secluded and not so secluded places.
In all instances his dog found all of the bones. He did find
that the bone he hid in a baseball glove under a couch
pillow took the longest for his dog to find.

Which Retains Heat Longer, Salt Water or Fresh Water?
Joseph Ferencik, Gr 7 found that his hypothesis stating
fresh water cooled faster because it was less dense was
incorrect! He identified that salt water cools faster
because it has a lower freezing point.

Weed Killer, Harmful or Helpful? John Dulko,
Gr 7 concluded that weed killer actually kills
your plants along with your weeds! The jar of
weed killer he used specifically stated that
this mixture was only for crab grass.
(I was glad I stopped by to visit this table!)

Does Your Size Effect Lung Capacity? Thomas Laupus,
Gr 5 concluded that adults and taller people can inhale
and take in more air than shorter people and children.

Be on hand for next year when the Science Fair will be held in the school’s auditorium. Every student
had something to teach all of us.
